The multi roll calendering, pre-cursor of the modern machine was originally developed in the mid 1800s for processing of rubber into sheets.
The rubber sheeting is still produced by calendering, which has also become the leading industrial process for the production of PVC sheeting of all kinds including for flooring.
Operationally a calender is a set of heated rolls to which hot, pre compounded plastic is fed, to be rolled out into continuous sheet as it passes through the consecutive roll nips.
In a PVC calendering line, the calender is preceded by a compounding and feed section and followed by a post calendering section, comprising the sheet take off, cooling, inspection and wind up unit. The main advantage of calendering over extrusion are high outputs and production rates, good product thickness control, ready automation, suitable for long and continuous runs. These features are largely responsible for the fact that most of PVC sheeting is manufactured by calendering, despite high cost of equipment and lower operational flexibility for short runs in comparison with the extrusion.
FENOPLAST LIMITED is the first company in India to manufacture PVC film, on a brand new imported, state-of-the-art calendering line from M/S.Battenfeld GmbH, West Germany.
The uniqueness of this calendering line is that it can produce both soft and rigid films. It has got an excellent feeding system in, the form of two stage planetary extruder, which gives an excellent homogeneity and a good profile for the PVC film.
Fenoplast Limited has a calendering line with a capacity to manufacture 400 MT of Soft and Rigid films per month.
